On Music and Design

I was initially, when given the opportunity to post on this website, going to write an extensive and decently written post about the symbiotic relationship between design and music, and how, the deeper I get into my work and the industry my work is situated in, I find that designers, in particular, graphic designers, straddle an interesting position when it comes to music.

This well-written, well-resourced and well-documented post will now be clumsily written and hastily posted in response to the news that the club night, Optimo (Espacio) will be soon to finish.

Now, whether or not Optimo will continue in any real fashion is beyond my attention at the moment, because what I want to firmly establish is that, I believe Optimo is the best night club in the world, for the essential reason that it is a club night that has run every Sunday, for the last 12.5 years, in Glasgow.

What makes this even more incredible, is the sheer determination and talent of it’s two creators, JG Wilkes and JD Twitch.

What may or may not be known, is that Jonnie Wilkes (JG Wilkes) designs 99% of all the flyers and posters for Optimo.

Now thats a poster and accompanying flyer, every one different, every week, for 12.5 years.

I find it hard to think of any other working designer that creates that amount of output, of that standard every week.

I still find it mindblowing that Jonnie Wilkes designs the poster and flyer for every Optimo.

There are exactly 7 more Optimo (Espacio) nights at the Sub Club, before it ceases to exist as a Sunday night club night.

I urge everyone to go to at least one.

I find this terribly sad, if only because it means there will be no more posters scattered around Glasgow, which absolutely beat any other poster design I think I have ever seen, anywhere.

The perfect relationship between music and design, and I doubt anyone really noticed.
