Here’s a trailer for a new documentary about the glamourous/sinister world of advertising:

Beyond Kerning

Interactive typography project by Michael Flückiger

Wanted: 780px x 200px Banner

Am going to ask the second years to help with this small project, but thought it should probably be open to anyone who wishes to take part: The task is to crop a 780 pixel wide by 200 pixel tall jpeg (at 72dpi) of something you’ve made this term, for use on the banner of this blog (up above here, where there is currently a blue rectangle). Then email them to me (n.mcguire <at> gsa.ac.uk), and there’ll be a random selection of these images when you visit the blog. Things you might need to factor in are that the white text of the blog title hovers over the image, and er… that’s it. If you wish to put a credit on the image suggest 7pt white or black helvetica text in the top right corner with 10 pixel margin, with your name and piece title.

Deadline is end of this term, friday 11th december.

Thanks.

Monocle

Missed David McKendricks talk at GSA (Art Director of Esquire, previously AD of Wallpaper). Wallpaper is part of Winkreative run by Tyler Brülé (FT writer) who also produce one of my favourite magazines Monocle. Definitely worth a look.

Glasgow Wood Recycling Project

tweetgreennatural

A message from Glasgow Wood Recycling, which may be of interest: Glasgow Wood Recycling is a social enterprise and charity dedicated to reclaiming and reusing wood waste.

We have recently established a retail space in Glasgow’s West End, called Dear Green Place, from which we sell a range of products made from reclaimed wood and supply timber. Like any other retailer over the Christmas period we are looking to capture the public’s imagination and draw some folk in by having great window displays. Most of our display space is external, although we have been given permission to use the window of a disused shop space on Dumbarton Road. We are looking for creative, practical and enthusiastic people to volunteer some time over the next few weeks to help develop concepts and install displays by Sat Dec 5th. We are open to groups or individuals who want to form a design team. Equipment and materials can be provided. Budget small but workable. This is a worth while voluntary opportunity that we aim to make useful to developing individual skills and experience. If you are interested. Please contact Hannah Clinch by Monday 16th November. email:hannah@glasgowwoodrecycling.org.uk If you would like to visit the site 7 Dalcross St, G11 5RE (behind Kelvinhall Underground Station) Open 10am-5pm Tue to Sat www.glasgowwoodrecycling.org.uk

analogue website

...another wobbly interface?

...another wobbly interface?

An analogue website created by Mathew Plummer Fernandez. It exists, it can be touched and is ‘built’ in a physical space, but is also translated to the world wide web as pixels via a webcam. Mathew explains the issues in building his site… ‘The website kept crashing (in a physical sense – the train would derail) so work is underway to make it a more stable site.’

Ladies of the Haus

Berlin Wall Chippers Schade

Three interesting links from the guardian this weekend – the first a new series of publications showcasing 100 great press photographs (collect ‘em all…), the second an article on the work of women from the Bauhaus, and the gap between the promise of equality and the reality of restricted roles (Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus apparently thought women could only think in two dimensions, or so it’s claimed in this article…), and the third being their coverage of the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
